Opening a bottle of sparkling wine should not be a stress-inducing moment of uncertainty, but rather a carefree bottle opening during a celebration. Although it may appear to be a simple process, there is a correct and an incorrect way to open a bottle of champagne (or sparkling wine such as Italian prosecco or Spanish cava)—and it doesn’t always involve a dramatic pose and a saber. Here’s what you should know to kick off the party.
How to Open a Bottle of Champagne Properly
To open a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine, you’ll need a chilled bottle of champagne and a clean, dry kitchen towel. That’s all you require! The following steps outline the process:
- Carefully remove the foil wrapping and wire cage from the cork. You can use a wine opener’s knife, although it’s not essential for this step. Dispose of the foil and cage.
- Place your kitchen towel over the top of the bottle. If you don’t have a kitchen towel, the hem of a shirt could suffice. Ensure that you aim the bottle away from yourself and maintain a firm grip on it. Hold the bottle with your non-dominant hand around its base and wrap your dominant hand over the towel, securing the cork.
- Confirm that the bottle’s top is pointed slightly away from you and from others. Begin to gently twist the bottle back and forth with your non-dominant hand while keeping the cork stable.
- As the bottle rotates, you’ll feel (and likely hear) the cork gradually loosening and then popping free, emitting a soft, muffled sound. Your bottle is now ready to be poured!
How to Avoid a Champagne Explosion
While it might appear amusing to dance beneath a shower of champagne, we all recognize that the true delight lies in savoring this sparkling wine. To ensure you maximize the amount of champagne in your glass (and consequently in your mouth), while avoiding mishaps such as spillage or excessive fizz, here are some essential tips and tricks to keep in mind before popping a champagne bottle:
- Keep it Chilled: Sparkling wine tends to erupt when opened, so ensure your bottle is properly chilled, ideally at around 45°F.
- Keep it Dry: A secure grip on both the bottle and cork is crucial for gently releasing the cork from the bottle. Using a towel aids in managing the cork and prevents it from darting across the room. Additionally, ensure the bottle is dry before beginning to twist it open.
- Pour it Slowly: To prevent excessive foaming in your flute, initially pour a small amount of wine into the bottom of each glass. Allow a few seconds for the bubbles to settle down before continuing to pour until the wine reaches just below the rim.
